Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has eased fears of a major knee injury after being forced off during Argentina’s 2-0 triumph against Austria in the FIFA World Cup. The defender was substituted early in the second half but remains hopeful of recovering in time for the team’s final group-stage encounter, offering reassurance to both Argentina and Tottenham fans amid concerns about his long-term fitness.
Romero gives update after being substituted
Romero aggravated an existing issue in his right knee around the 57th minute of Argentina’s convincing 2-0 victory over Austria. He was replaced by Nicolas Otamendi as Argentina sealed their qualification for the knockout phase. Romero had previously missed the final six matches of the Premier League season due to a right knee injury sustained in a collision with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
The 26-year-old defender made a strong recovery in time for the World Cup and played 80 minutes in Argentina’s opening 3-0 win over Algeria. Although he lasted only 12 minutes into the second half against Austria, Romero moved quickly to dispel fears of any serious setback regarding his knee problem.
Romero confident of fitness ahead of next match
Romero remains confident that he will be available for Argentina’s final group-stage clash against Jordan. Speaking to the media after the match, he expressed optimism about his recovery timeline.
Romero told reporters, “I knew this could happen to me. I had a little issue there, I felt it again, but in 3 or 4 days I’ll be fine again, so that’s that. It’s nothing serious. Keep the head up and I'll come back stronger than before.” The Argentina defender, who played a key role in the Albiceleste’s World Cup triumph in Qatar 2022, continues to be a vital figure in Lionel Scaloni’s defensive setup.
Scaloni awaits medical results on Romero
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni is hoping for positive updates from the medical team. He acknowledged that Romero has been managing discomfort in his knee for some time and admitted the staff will proceed cautiously.
Scaloni said, “We don’t know the extent of Cuti Romero’s issue; it’s something he’s been dealing with for a while now. We hope it’s nothing serious. Not only because he’s important, even though he can be replaced, but it’s always important to have everyone available. He’ll undergo tests tomorrow or the day after.” Scaloni is expected to make several changes for the upcoming fixture against Jordan, with one eye on keeping key players fresh for the knockout rounds.
What lies ahead for Argentina and Romero?
Romero will now undergo medical examinations to determine the full extent of his knee issue. Scaloni is likely to rest him for the final group match against Jordan to allow sufficient recovery time. In Romero’s absence, Otamendi is expected to anchor the defence as Argentina aim to maintain their perfect record in this summer’s World Cup campaign.
