
Tehran, June 24. Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral rituals of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial US-Israeli attack on February 28.
PM Modi did not issue any condolence message on Khamenei’s death.
It is noteworthy that PM Modi did not issue any condolence message on Khamenei’s death. However, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to sign a condolence book on behalf of the Indian government.
Nothing clear yet regarding PM Modi’s visit to Iran
It is not yet clear whether PM Modi will attend the funeral of Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei or not. Earlier in May 2024, India had announced a day of national mourning after the death of the then President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. India had sent a delegation to attend Raisi’s funeral, which was led by then Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
4 Funeral programs will start from July
Ali Khamenei’s long-awaited funeral is being held four months after his death. It will begin on July 4 with the body being laid to rest at the Grand Mosala Complex in Tehran. After this, public processions will be taken out in the cities of Tehran and Qom. Prayers will be read for him in Iraq’s holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
Khamenei will be buried in Mashhad
Ali Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on July 9. Mashhad is Khamenei’s hometown. Iranian officials expect millions of people to attend the funeral.
India has decades-old relations with Iran. New Delhi has invested in several projects in Iran, of which Chabahar Port is a major one. During Iran’s war with America, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has held several rounds of talks with his Iranian counterparts.
