Scotland are set to face Brazil tonight at 11pm British time, with the Group C encounter taking place at the Miami Stadium.
The current Group C standings remain wide open. Scotland could move to the top of the table if they manage to defeat Brazil and Haiti pull off an upset against Morocco.
The Tartan Army, who celebrated their first World Cup victory in 36 years with a win over Haiti, will be in full voice this evening. But the big question is – who will be the referee for this decisive clash?
Mexican official Cesar Ramos has been appointed as the referee for the Scotland vs Brazil fixture.
Assisting Ramos on the sidelines will be his compatriots Alberto Morin and Marco Bisguerra as assistant referees.
Norway’s Espen Eskas has been named the fourth official for the contest, while the officials responsible for VAR duties have not yet been confirmed.
Heading into tonight’s match, Brazil lead Group C on four points thanks to their superior goal difference, followed by Morocco in second place and Scotland in third with three points.
Scottish fans may be particularly interested in Ramos' previous World Cup experience, as he has officiated matches involving both Brazil and Morocco in earlier tournaments.
During Brazil’s opening match of the 2018 World Cup, the Seleção lodged a complaint against Ramos after he chose not to award a foul in the lead-up to a goal scored by their opponents.
Similarly, in the 2022 World Cup semi-final between Morocco and France, the Moroccan side filed a complaint against Ramos, alleging that he had failed to award what they believed were two clear penalties.
That match was part of Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup campaign, but their players and fans felt that several key decisions went against them, influencing their semi-final exit.
This fixture will mark Ramos’ sixth appearance as a referee on the World Cup stage. Across those matches, he has averaged two yellow cards per game.
In addition to his international experience, Ramos has officiated 144 matches in Mexico’s Liga MX, Apertura, where he has averaged five bookings per game.
