An exciting transfer prospect has emerged for Manchester United — one they simply cannot afford to overlook.
In the months leading up to this summer’s transfer window, numerous midfielders have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. It was hardly a secret that United’s most pressing need this summer was to strengthen the midfield.
Casemiro’s departure was confirmed early, while Manuel Ugarte is also expected to end his difficult spell at the club. With both exits, the 20-time English champions have several midfield reinforcements to complete if they are to compete strongly across all competitions.
Among the many midfielders associated with United, a deal for Ederson has already been finalised. The club’s attention now turns to the remaining signings required to complete their midfield revamp.
However, it hasn’t been a straightforward process. Interest in Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali has cooled, and United have decided not to pursue those deals further. Even the pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, who is currently considered a priority target, has become complicated as Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for his signature.
While reports suggest United could consider AFC Bournemouth’s Alex Scott should the Fernandes move collapse, another option appears to be slipping under the radar — Joao Gomes.
Despite Wolverhampton Wanderers’ inconsistent season, Gomes was one of their standout performers. Known for his relentless tackling and exceptional ball-winning skills, he established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defensive midfielders.
United were strongly linked with the Brazilian earlier, but as they delayed their approach until the end of the season, Atletico Madrid moved first. Reports in early May confirmed that the Spanish giants had agreed personal terms with Gomes, seemingly ending United’s hopes of signing him.
However, with no agreement reached between the clubs, there remains room for United to mount a late hijack. For several weeks, there has been little news on Gomes’ proposed move to Atletico, but this week Spain’s Mundo Deportivo reported that the deal is currently on hold — presenting United with a golden opportunity.
The Spanish publication explained that Gomes’ transfer was tied to Bernardo Silva joining Atletico Madrid, as both players share the same agent, Jorge Mendes. When Silva backed out, the deal for the Wolverhampton midfielder was paused. Additionally, Atletico are reportedly unwilling to meet Wolves’ valuation, with fees for both Gomes and Morten Hjulmand exceeding €40 million — an amount the Spanish club is not prepared to pay.
If United submit a £35 million offer, which is believed to meet Wolves’ expectations, they could successfully hijack the move to Spain. Just as they convinced Ederson to snub Atletico despite already agreeing personal terms, they could do the same with Gomes.
Agreeing on personal terms with the Brazilian — described by manager Gary O’Neil as a “super talent” — should not prove difficult. The opportunity to continue playing in the Premier League will undoubtedly appeal to him.
By securing both Ederson and Gomes for around £35 million each, United could make an £80 million-plus deal for Fernandes financially feasible, paving the way for a genuine midfield rebuild.
