Several players from Germany’s national football team are reportedly advocating for Oliver Baumann to start in goal against Ecuador tomorrow, according to Sky Germany.
If this plan goes ahead, Baumann would be making his first-ever World Cup appearance. The move is said to be viewed by teammates as a gesture of appreciation and reward for his contributions to the team.
During a period of injury troubles, Baumann featured in all six of Germany’s World Cup qualifying matches, managing to keep four clean sheets—a performance that earned him notable respect within the squad.
Reports from the pay-TV broadcaster indicate that the subject of Baumann’s potential inclusion has been actively discussed in the German dressing room in recent hours.
Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether head coach Julian Nagelsmann and first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will agree to the change. Neuer, who has long been recognised as a consummate team player, is expected to play a significant role in making the final decision.
It is also important to note that this tournament marks the 40-year-old Neuer’s final appearance in international football. Moreover, he could extend his record of World Cup appearances to 22, having already set a new German milestone with his 21st outing against Côte d'Ivoire.
