FIFA has confirmed the officiating team for the crucial Group Stage encounter between South Africa and South Korea, a match that carries significant implications for both sides’ hopes of progressing in the tournament.
South Africa, who had two players dismissed in their opening fixture, are in a must-win situation if they are to keep their qualification hopes alive. Meanwhile, a draw would be sufficient for South Korea to secure second place in the group, behind group leaders Mexico, who have already guaranteed top spot.
Given the high stakes and the tense atmosphere expected, FIFA has chosen one of its most experienced referees to handle the match.
Argentinian referee Facundo Tello will take charge of the game. Tello has been a top-flight referee in Argentina for more than a decade and is known for his firm yet fair approach. He notably oversaw the 2022 Champions Trophy final between Boca Juniors and Racing Club, a match that saw an astonishing ten red cards issued.
Tello also officiated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he was appointed to three matches. His strong performances there earned him another high-profile assignment at Euro 2024, where he was part of the officiating team — a rare occurrence for a South American referee.
This fixture will be Tello’s second outing in the current tournament, following his management of the 1-1 draw between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier in the group stage.
Assisting him on the lines will be fellow Argentinians Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, both of whom bring extensive international experience. Colombian official Alexander Guzman will act as the fourth official, with another Colombian, also named Alexander Guzman, serving as the reserve assistant referee.
As of now, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team for the match has not been announced.
The appointment of such a seasoned officiating crew underscores the importance of maintaining composure and discipline in what promises to be a fiercely contested match between South Africa and South Korea.
