Do you dream of becoming an architect? Have you always felt the urge to design beautiful buildings or hotels according to your own vision? If so, you have the potential to become a successful architect; however, few people know exactly how to achieve this or what kind of education is required. Furthermore, do architects work under others, or do they operate independently by opening their own firms and undertaking government projects? Renowned architect Atul Gupta discussed these topics in detail. He explained that a student aspiring to be an architect must develop an understanding not only of building design but also of planning, structural integrity, environmental factors, and urban development. He emphasized the importance of building a strong portfolio, as it is the key to securing multi-crore rupee government and private projects.
How does one train to become an architect?
Renowned architect Atul Gupta explained that having Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 12 is mandatory for becoming an architect. This is followed by a five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) course. Admission typically requires clearing the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) entrance exam, which is held three times a year. Only those who qualify in this exam get the opportunity to pursue the Bachelor of Architecture degree, based on which one can select a college or university.
The curriculum includes design, drawing, 3D modeling, construction techniques, and internships. He drew a parallel to other professions: just as aspiring doctors must work under senior doctors as junior doctors, and aspiring lawyers must work alongside senior lawyers, an aspiring architect must also work under a senior architect for two to three years after completing their studies. Doing so paves the way for a successful career as an architect.
**Earnings and Securing Government Projects**
Renowned architect Atul Gupta stated that entry-level architects can earn between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh annually, while those with 3–5 years of experience can earn between ₹6 lakh and ₹12 lakh per year. In major cities and prestigious firms, annual packages can reach around ₹15 lakh. He noted that there is no fixed upper limit on earnings if one starts their own architecture studio or consultancy. Regarding how to secure government projects, he explained that an architect must first register with the Council of Architecture and establish their own firm or consultancy. One must keep track of tenders issued by various government departments, development authorities, and public sector undertakings. Participation in tenders is based on experience, technical qualifications, and financial eligibility. Starting with smaller projects to build a strong portfolio increases the likelihood of securing larger government projects.
**Government Projects Architects Work On**
Architect Atul Gupta explained that as an architect, one can work on projects such as school and college buildings, hospitals, railway and metro stations, government offices, smart city initiatives, and housing and redevelopment projects. He emphasized that everything ultimately depends on one's capabilities.
