That tough officer of 1993 batch: Mastermind of intelligence operations from Kashmir to Kanyakumari

Mahesh Dixit, who is going to be the new IB Chief, is a very tough and visionary IPS officer of 1993 batch Andhra Pradesh cadre. He was currently posted as Special Director in IB and was the second most senior officer of the agency after Tapan Deka. Dixit is no ordinary bureaucrat, but has a long, practical and vast experience of carrying out anti-terrorism and covert intelligence operations in the most remote and disturbed areas of the country. Earlier, he had established his reputation as the head of Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Jammu and Kashmir, where he led many such operations which are still recorded in the secret documents of IB.

Mission 'Article 370': When even the bird could not kill in the valley!

The most historic and turning point of Mahesh Dixit's career was 'Mission Kashmir' of the year 2019. In August 2019, when the Central Government took the unprecedented decision to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, Mahesh Dixit was at the forefront among the top officials who weaved the maze of security preparations and intelligence just before this sensitive step. He not only accurately assessed the security implications arising from this historic decision, but also devised a foolproof strategy to maintain law and order without shedding even a drop of blood in the valley. After the reorganization of the state, he was given the extremely important intelligence responsibilities of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, where he made unprecedented contributions in making the security system impenetrable as well as in restoring the confidence of the local public.

G20 maze in Srinagar: Attack on security of foreign diplomats and propaganda

The entire world recognized the strategic capability of Mahesh Dixit when a high-profile meeting of the 'G20 Tourism Working Group' was organized in the sensitive environment of Srinagar in the year 2023. In this meeting, foreign diplomats and delegations of many countries had reached Kashmir, which was a question of India's credibility in front of the whole world. Dixit, along with his intelligence team, presented such an accurate and precise assessment of the ground situation that India's confidence at the international level increased manifold. His role is considered to be the most decisive in destroying the fake propaganda and international propaganda being spread by Pakistan and separatist forces.

After all, what does 139 year old 'IB' do?

The Intelligence Bureau is the oldest internal intelligence agency of India, established in the year 1887. After independence (1947), it was reorganized as the central domestic intelligence agency of India. It works under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is headed by the Director, Intelligence Bureau (DIB). The main function of IB is to timely alert the government by gathering inputs related to terrorist activities, espionage networks, separatism, extremism, Naxalism, communal tension, cyber threats and VIP security within the country. The agency also prepares security assessments during major elections, international events and sensitive incidents.

What are the new challenges before Mahesh Dixit?

Now, when Mahesh Dixit is going to take over as the director of this agency for the next two years, the challenges before him are also very modern and dangerous. Amidst the changing regional equations, keeping the country's VIP security impenetrable, thwarting cross-border cyber attacks and stopping anti-national fake propaganda (fake narrative) on social media is going to be the most important part of their secret mission. The whole country is now eager to see to what high level this new commander of the country takes India's internal security.
