Manchester United are reportedly showing interest in Danny Welbeck and Ivan Toney as they assess potential options to provide competition for Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko has had an outstanding debut season in England following his high-profile transfer from RB Leipzig last summer.
Although he took some time to adapt under Ruben Amorim, Sesko’s performance improved significantly after Michael Carrick replaced the Portuguese manager. He concluded the Premier League season with an impressive tally of 11 goals, the most in the league during the second half of the campaign.
With Joshua Zirkzee expected to depart this summer, Manchester United could find themselves with Sesko as their only seasoned natural striker.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, who spoke on The United Stand, the club is fully aware of the situation. Jacobs explained that United are open to bringing in another striker, but they are unlikely to chase a young option such as Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi.
Reports indicate that the club prefers to sign an experienced forward, with Welbeck and Toney both being considered.
Jacobs stated, “My feeling is that if they go for a number nine, it will more likely be an experienced name and someone who can have a strong positive influence in the dressing room. They would understand the need to step in during a long season, knowing they might not play every match, but still accept that role in a campaign where Man United aim to compete on several fronts.”
He added, “We’ve discussed before how popular it could be to bring back someone like Danny Welbeck. There’s nothing advanced at this stage, but if they give it genuine thought, the supporters would likely welcome it. However, I don’t think Brighton would be keen to let him go.”
Jacobs also mentioned, “Ivan Toney is a player that Manchester United admire.”
He noted, “Wages could be a concern as he’s currently earning well in Saudi Arabia. It remains to be seen what happens after the World Cup and whether Toney is open to leaving Saudi. Despite constant speculation that he wants to move, I’ve always been told that both football-wise and family-wise, he’s quite settled there.”
Jacobs further revealed that United also have an eye on Brentford’s Igor Thiago, who scored 22 goals in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season.
However, similar to Brighton’s stance on Welbeck, Jacobs expressed doubt about Brentford’s willingness to sell Thiago.
He said, “There are certainly players in the Premier League, or those with Premier League experience, including some older ones, that Manchester United are now evaluating.”
It is understood that United are seeking a squad player, which suggests that Sesko remains their near-certain first-choice striker. While potential moves for Welbeck and Toney appear to face some obstacles at present, the situation remains open, and further developments could follow if their interest turns into serious pursuit.
