Manchester United’s Andre Onana poised to extend his loan stay at Trabzonspor as new agreement nears completion

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana looks set to spend another season on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor, with both clubs close to finalising an agreement. The Cameroon international has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the emergence of Senne Lammens as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

United are reportedly on the verge of completing terms with Trabzonspor for Onana’s return to the Super Lig on a season-long loan. The 30-year-old was previously sent to the Turkish outfit after losing his place to Lammens, whose arrival effectively ended Onana’s time as United’s number one.

During the 2025–26 season, Onana enjoyed a strong spell in Turkey, helping Trabzonspor lift the Turkish Cup after defeating Konyaspor in May. Although United had hoped to sell him permanently to recover part of the £47.2 million paid to Inter Milan in 2023, another loan move now appears to be the most practical solution for both parties.

Sending Onana back to Trabzonspor also spares United an uncomfortable situation during their pre-season preparations. The ex-Ajax goalkeeper, who still owns a home near Manchester and remains under contract for two more years, is not part of manager Michael Carrick’s future plans for the first team at Carrington.

Reports suggest that Onana’s outspoken personality and his £120,000-per-week wages make him an uneasy fit as a backup option. Rather than keeping a high-profile figure on the bench, United prefer for him to continue playing regular football in Turkey, where he has already become a fan favourite.

Lammens’s rapid rise has completely reshaped United’s goalkeeping department. Signed from Royal Antwerp for £21.7 million, the Belgian was voted the Premier League’s transfer of the season after an outstanding debut campaign. His reliable performances have firmly established him as the undisputed number one for the Red Devils.

With Lammens now entrenched as first-choice, United are turning their attention to recruiting a dependable deputy. Veteran Tom Heaton has agreed to a one-year contract extension, while the club continues to monitor Leeds United’s Karl Darlow and Wolves’ Sam Johnstone as possible replacements for current backup Altay Bayindir, who may depart this summer.

Following a successful 2025–26 campaign that saw them finish third in the Premier League and secure a return to the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United are planning for the future under newly appointed permanent manager Michael Carrick. The club’s focus is on building a squad capable of sustaining progress rather than offering fresh starts to players like Onana and Marcus Rashford, signalling a commitment to long-term development through high-quality signings.
