Arsenal are preparing a fresh bid for Bruno Guimaraes after Newcastle United turned down their initial £55 million offer. Reports suggest that the Premier League champions are determined to land the Brazilian midfielder, who has become one of Mikel Arteta’s top priorities following his impressive displays at the 2026 World Cup.

Gunners see first proposal rejected

The north London club’s first approach, worth £55 million, was swiftly rejected by Newcastle. The Magpies view the 28-year-old as central to Eddie Howe’s plans, and with the player contracted until June 2028, they have no intention of letting their captain leave easily. Guimaraes has been a key figure since arriving at St James’ Park, dictating tempo and setting the standard in midfield.

Despite the initial setback, Arsenal remain undeterred. According to Globo, the Gunners are expected to return with an improved offer soon. Manager Mikel Arteta is eager to bring in a midfielder with exceptional ball retention and tactical awareness as part of his efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of their title defence. Sporting director Andrea Berta, a long-time admirer of Guimaraes from his time at Atletico Madrid, is leading the pursuit.

Newcastle determined to keep their talisman

Although Newcastle will not feature in European competitions next season, their majority owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), are under no financial pressure to sell. Guimaraes remains both a tactical cornerstone and a fan favourite on Tyneside, making his potential departure a major concern for the club’s ambitions.

The Magpies recognise the challenge of competing with the allure of joining the reigning champions, but they remain in a strong position thanks to the player’s long-term contract. While Arsenal’s opening bid fell short of Newcastle’s expectations, they are preparing for a follow-up offer that could severely test their resolve.

World Cup heroics boost interest

Currently representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup, Guimaraes has further enhanced his reputation as one of the best midfielders in world football. He has been instrumental in the group stages, providing three assists, including two in Brazil’s victory over Scotland, as the Selecao gear up for their knockout match against Japan. His performances have only increased his market value and intensified Arsenal’s pursuit.

Although aware of the ongoing negotiations between the clubs, Guimaraes is reportedly staying focused on Brazil’s campaign for their sixth World Cup title. His standout contributions for Newcastle last season — 17 goal involvements in 41 appearances — underline his consistency and quality, further justifying Arsenal’s aggressive approach.

Arteta’s vision for continued dominance

Guimaraes is one piece in Arteta’s broader plan to keep Arsenal at the top of English football. The Gunners have already been active in the transfer market, completing the £34.5 million signing of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen. Strengthening the midfield is seen as the next key step as Arteta looks to refine his tactical system.

In addition to Guimaraes, Arsenal are also monitoring Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, despite his potential £100 million valuation. By targeting proven Premier League stars like Guimaraes and Rogers, Arsenal are signalling their intent to maintain domestic dominance for seasons to come. For now, attention turns to whether their second bid for Newcastle’s No. 39 will be enough to convince the Magpies to negotiate.
