Journalist Ben Jacobs has stated that Manchester United are targeting an experienced striker during the upcoming summer transfer window, with Danny Welbeck and Ivan Toney being two players under consideration.
The Red Devils are also keen to strengthen their midfield options, having already reached an agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson earlier this month, although the deal has not yet been officially announced.
In addition to a midfielder, Manchester United are prioritising the acquisition of a new left-back and left-winger this summer. A central defender and a centre-forward are also on their list of potential reinforcements.
Brentford’s Igor Thiago has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the Brazilian forward’s price tag could make the deal difficult to complete this summer.
According to Jacobs, the club would prefer to bring in a striker with more experience to complement Benjamin Sesko, who showed improved form in front of goal towards the end of last season.
Jacobs explained that Brighton’s Danny Welbeck and Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney are among the experienced forwards being considered by Manchester United as they look to bolster their attack.
Speaking on The United Stand, Jacobs said: “My feeling is that if they go for a number nine, it’s more likely to be an experienced player – someone who can be a positive influence in the dressing room. They’ll understand that they may not start every match but will accept that role in a season when Manchester United hope to compete on multiple fronts.”
He added: “We’ve previously discussed the idea of bringing back Danny Welbeck. There’s nothing concrete happening at the moment, but if the club seriously consider it, I think supporters would welcome that move. However, I doubt Brighton would be willing to let him go.”
Toney, who was a surprise inclusion in England’s World Cup squad under Thomas Tuchel, has been in outstanding form for Al-Ahli this season, netting 32 goals in 32 appearances in the Saudi Pro League.
Jacobs further commented on the England international: “Ivan Toney is a player I’ve mentioned before – someone Manchester United admire.”
He continued: “His wages could be a stumbling block, as he’s on a lucrative deal in Saudi Arabia. We’ll have to wait and see what happens after the World Cup. Despite ongoing speculation that he wants to leave, I’ve been told he’s quite content both professionally and personally in Saudi Arabia.”
