Trump Warns of Trade Retaliation Over European Digital Taxes

President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning regarding potential trade repercussions for European nations contemplating new taxes on American technology companies. He cautioned that any country that enacts such taxes would incur hefty tariffs on their exports to the United States. In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump noted that multiple European governments are currently deliberating the introduction of a Digital Services Tax targeting American firms, with some nearing implementation.

He emphasized that any nation proceeding with this tax would face an immediate 100% tariff on all goods exported to the U.S., labeling this response as automatic and non-negotiable. Furthermore, Trump indicated that these tariffs would take precedence over any existing trade agreements, whether finalized or still in discussion.

This statement heightens the ongoing tensions between Washington and European capitals regarding digital taxation, which U.S. officials argue disproportionately impacts major American tech companies. In contrast, European governments justify these taxes as a means to ensure that multinational tech firms contribute a fair share of revenue in the countries where they operate, even if they do not have a physical presence there.

Trump's warning suggests a significant escalation in trade tensions across the Atlantic, particularly if these tax proposals advance, potentially leading to widespread tariffs on various imported goods.
