Bringing in fresh midfield talent for Arsenal is not just about elevating the team’s potential but also about reinforcing its overall depth and stability.
Spanish manager Mikel Arteta guided the Gunners to their first Premier League crown in 22 years, and preparations to defend that title are already in full motion.
Discussions have centred on whether Arsenal’s style of play might evolve now that the pressure of ending their long title drought has eased, possibly allowing for a more expressive brand of football next season.
After Arsenal’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Arteta highlighted the importance of remaining “ambitious” in the transfer market.
He praised PSG’s technical mastery and the way they trouble opponents with their on-ball quality.
“What they can do with the ball, through individual brilliance, I haven’t seen before,” said Arteta. “It’s not part of the plan to play in certain zones without possession, but their quality forces you into it—so credit to our players.”
When asked if he intended to replicate that style, Arteta responded, “Yes, and certainly the individual flair they possess.”
Bruno Guimaraes, if signed, would primarily operate as a No.8, giving Martin Zubimendi the freedom to act as cover for Declan Rice in the holding role.
With that vision, Arsenal are prioritising attacking reinforcements, and Morgan Rogers is high on their summer shortlist.
The Gunners have also opened discussions with representatives of Bruno Guimaraes as they aim to strengthen their midfield options.
Although Newcastle United maintain that Guimaraes is not for sale, reports indicate that Arsenal have made a verbal approach worth around £55 million to his camp.
Much like Rogers, Guimaraes is well-versed in the physical demands of the Premier League and would bring additional steel to Arteta’s midfield setup.
With Christian Norgaard potentially leaving the Emirates this summer, the move to sign a new midfielder is aimed at increasing the overall floor of the squad as much as enhancing its ceiling.
Declan Rice has been managing neural pain in his hamstring for the past six months, and his workload will need careful monitoring, especially in the period following the World Cup.
Bruno Guimaraes and Morgan Rogers could play vital roles in Arsenal’s evolved tactical system.
Guimaraes would be expected to feature primarily as a No.8, which would allow Zubimendi to slot in seamlessly as the deepest midfielder when required.
Youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly would still receive valuable minutes, as Guimaraes’ arrival would not block his long-term progress, unlike the potential signing of someone like Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The Brazilian could also partner Rice in a double pivot ahead of the defence, or operate as an advanced No.8 in a role similar to that played by Granit Xhaka during the 2022–23 campaign.
That particular season, when Arsenal first re-emerged as genuine title contenders, was marked by thrilling, fast-paced, and somewhat chaotic football.
Xhaka thrived as the left-sided No.8, often covering at full-back but also driving forward into attacking areas and forming effective combinations with Gabriel Martinelli on the wing.
Since then, Arteta has opted for a more measured tactical structure, tightening the midfield and placing greater emphasis on control. The Rice–Zubimendi pairing provided a consistent defensive foundation throughout the campaign.
Arteta alternated between using a double pivot and deploying either Rice or Zubimendi further forward, but neither offered the same attacking edge as Xhaka once did.
Guimaraes, however, would bring a more dynamic attacking presence than Zubimendi, while retaining the defensive aggression that Arteta values.
In the 2025–26 Premier League season, Guimaraes recorded nine goals and five assists, underlining his ability to influence play in the final third.
His tendency to make late runs into the box as a No.8 could help unlock defences and create more space for Arsenal’s wingers, who sometimes find themselves crowded out by opposition double-marking.
At times last season, Arsenal appeared to lack technical sharpness in possession, relying heavily on an elite defensive framework rather than fluid ball retention.
Guimaraes’ progressive passing would significantly enhance Arsenal’s control in midfield without compromising their off-ball discipline.
Meanwhile, Arsenal remain eager to secure Morgan Rogers, whose physical attributes and versatility could complement both Guimaraes and Rice in a powerful and balanced midfield trio.
If Rogers were to be deployed on the left flank, Martin Ødegaard could complete the midfield three, giving Arsenal a unit far more capable of dominating possession and suffocating opponents than they managed throughout much of the past season.
