Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are locked in a transfer battle for West Ham United’s dynamic midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Both clubs are actively working to strengthen their midfield options, and in doing so, find themselves competing for the Hammers’ industrious Portuguese talent.
The 21-year-old stands out as a highly adaptable central midfielder, capable of combining top-tier defensive contributions with composed ball progression and creative playmaking.
Securing his signature would likely address several midfield shortcomings for any team. For Michael Carrick in particular, Fernandes’ versatility would allow him to feature as a defensive midfielder, a box-to-box number eight, or even as an advanced playmaker when required. Such multi-functional midfielders are rare to find.
Having outgrown the Championship level, West Ham are prepared to sanction a sale, but only on their own terms. The East London club have made it clear that Fernandes will not depart for less than £80 million.
Manchester United are reluctant to meet that valuation, while Tottenham appear to have the financial muscle to do so but have yet to make an official move.
The latest twist in this transfer pursuit reportedly comes from the Tottenham camp. According to Claret and Hugh, the North London outfit are exploring an inventive proposal: “Spurs may dangle the carrot by offering West Ham Mikey Moore.”
The young Spurs winger, who impressed during his loan spell at Rangers last season, could be included in a season-long loan arrangement with West Ham as part of the deal. The idea behind this is to use Moore as a bargaining chip to reduce the overall fee.
However, the Hammers are not expected to be swayed by such an offer. The report further notes: “West Ham are expected to stand firm on their £80–85 million valuation of the Portuguese midfielder, irrespective of whatever carrots are dangled to sweeten the package.”
Ultimately, the outcome will depend on which club agrees to meet West Ham’s financial demands. Manchester United’s part-owners, Ineos, have indicated a reluctance to overpay and could potentially walk away from the deal, with Bristol City’s Alex Scott reportedly being considered as a more affordable alternative.
Whether that firm stance holds or United decide to meet the Hammers’ asking price remains to be seen, especially in light of Manchester City’s recent £130 million agreement for Elliot Anderson — a stark reminder of how inflated the transfer market has become.
