The group stage of the 2026 World Cup has already been illuminated by an abundance of goals from some of the world’s finest forwards, but only one group features two of the most prolific among them.
The Norway vs France encounter marks the first match of the tournament where two elite, in-form strikers go head-to-head. While Lionel Messi leads the scoring charts, both Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe rank among the most formidable modern-day goal machines.
Watching them share the same pitch with eight goals between them at such an early stage of the competition is a delight for football fans everywhere.
Norway WIN - 4/1
Draw - 16/5
France WIN - 4/7
It’s a common misconception to dismiss Norway as a one-man side. While Haaland’s brilliance often overshadows others, the Manchester City striker’s extraordinary quality can, on his day, make up for the gap between Norway’s overall level and France’s deeper talent pool.
France manager Didier Deschamps is expected to have a detailed plan to contain Haaland, and his defenders have the calibre to execute it effectively. Whether Norway coach Stale Solbakken can devise a similarly effective counter-plan remains to be seen.
The Group I storyline has largely unfolded as expected. Both Norway and France registered comfortable three-goal wins over Iraq and managed to overcome Senegal, who might feel hard done by after facing two of the tournament’s most potent attacking sides.
When these teams last met, Haaland was just 13 and Mbappe 15. France triumphed 4-0 in a friendly at the Stade de France, with Olivier Giroud netting a brace. That victory ended Les Bleus’ five-match winless run against Norway.
This time, the stakes are far higher. The winner will top Group I and earn a round of 32 fixture at MetLife Stadium against a third-placed side.
Finishing second, however, would set up a clash with Ivory Coast and potentially pave the way for a daunting meeting with Brazil or tournament co-hosts Mexico in the knockout rounds.
All eyes will be on the headline showdown. Haaland, making his World Cup debut, has already scored four goals in two matches. Mbappe, a World Cup winner in 2018, has matched that total in 2026.
Mbappe also has additional motivation: he is closing in on Messi’s newly set record as the all-time top scorer in World Cup history.
The French captain currently sits on 16 goals, level with former record-holder Miroslav Klose, and time is clearly on his side. His sharpness and leadership could once again prove decisive, just as they did in France’s victories over Senegal and Iraq.

The match will be televised live on ITV in the United Kingdom, Fox in the United States, and SBS in Australia.
