The father of Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has spoken about the strong personal connection and mutual admiration that exists between his son and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Speaking from the World Cup venue, Jacinto Teixeira shared how Dalot’s childhood admiration for Ronaldo developed into a heartfelt friendship during their time together at Old Trafford.

Family support for the defender

Dalot’s family has travelled across the United States to cheer him on in what is his second World Cup appearance. With eight seasons of experience at Manchester United, the adaptable full-back is well-equipped to operate on either side of defence. Teixeira expressed total faith in his son’s physical fitness and mental preparation, believing Dalot is ready to earn a starting place as the tournament progresses.

Teixeira praises Ronaldo connection

Dalot’s growing closeness to the Portugal captain became apparent when Ronaldo sprinted to the bench to embrace him after scoring the opening goal against Uzbekistan, highlighting their special rapport developed at Old Trafford.

In an interview with O Jogo, Teixeira described how this bond evolved from admiration to friendship. He said: “I found it very amusing because it happened right in front of me. I saw Cristiano running to celebrate with Diogo, and that made me very happy.

“Cristiano has always been Diogo’s idol. Although Diogo no longer lives with us, I’ve kept the Cristiano Ronaldo posters that once decorated his wardrobe and bedroom doors.

“He has always looked up to Cristiano for his discipline, hard work, sense of responsibility, and resilience. When Cristiano returned to Manchester United, their relationship grew even stronger. Perhaps Cristiano recognised a bit of himself in Diogo.

“Diogo is equally responsible, disciplined, and eager to learn, especially when it comes to recovery and nutrition. Maybe Cristiano sees some of his younger self in Diogo. That makes me proud because their friendship is truly genuine.”

Strong international partnership forged

Since Euro 2020, which was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic, Dalot and Ronaldo have featured together 28 times for Portugal. Remarkably, only one of Ronaldo’s 145 international goals has been assisted by Dalot. The full-back has yet to make an appearance in this edition of the World Cup, with head coach Roberto Martinez opting for Joao Cancelo in the starting lineup so far.

Upcoming test against Colombia

Portugal confirmed their spot in the round of 32 even before their final group-stage game. This comfortable position gives Martinez the flexibility to rotate his squad in the next match against an in-form Colombia side. The clash is expected to be a true test for the Selecao, while also offering Dalot an excellent opportunity to claim a starting role and help contain the dynamic South American attack.
