Second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane powered England to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Panama on Saturday, securing the Three Lions a top spot in Group L and a seemingly easier path in the World Cup knockout phase.
On a rainy afternoon at the MetLife Stadium, a massive, vocal pro-England crowd turned the American arena into a virtual Wembley. However, the first half was a drab affair as a disciplined Panama side restricted England from creating any clear chances. England captain Harry Kane was completely isolated, managing just 10 touches in the opening 45 minutes—the fewest of any player on the pitch.
The European giants finally unlocked the Panamanian defense in the 62nd minute. Off a brilliant corner kick from the returning Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham managed to stick out his left leg and stab the ball past goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, despite being held tightly in a bear hug by defender Jorge Gutiérrez. It marked Bellingham's third career World Cup goal.
Five minutes later, Bellingham turned provider. The midfield star floated an accurate cross from the left flank, allowing Kane to outjump Andrés Andrade and plant a powerful header into the back of the net. The strike was Kane's 82nd international goal and his 11th in World Cups, moving him past Gary Lineker to become England's highest-ever goalscorer in the tournament's history.
Sporting their red jerseys for the first time in a major tournament since 2018, Thomas Tuchel’s men wrapped up the group stage unbeaten with seven points. The victory ensures England will play their Round of 32 match on Wednesday in Atlanta, likely facing Senegal or Congo. Winning the group helps England avoid a nightmare bracket that would have pitted them against heavyweights like Portugal, Colombia, or Spain.
For Panama, it was another disappointing exit, finishing 0-3 and joining a list of teams to lose their first six consecutive World Cup matches. They thought they had pulled a goal back in stoppage time through José Fajardo, but the strike was ruled out for offside.
Tuchel made sweeping tactical changes for the game, starting central defender Jarell Quansah at right-back to replace the injured Reece James, while Nico O’Reilly filled in at left-back. Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper Jordan Pickford earned his 15th World Cup appearance, moving just two games behind Peter Shilton's all-time English record of 17.
