It has been one year since the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign was started by the Election Commission for special revision of voter list. During this period, a thorough investigation of the voter lists was conducted in 10 states and 3 union territories of the country, after which the names of about 5.8 crore voters were removed. At the same time, under the third phase, this process is going on in 16 states and three union territories.

SIR was launched on June 24 last year before the Bihar Assembly elections. After this, its second phase started from 4th November. In this phase, special verification of voter lists was carried out in 9 states and 3 union territories.

If we talk about statistics, the maximum impact of this campaign was seen in Uttar Pradesh. During the second phase of revision, names of a record 2.04 crore people were removed from the voter list in Uttar Pradesh alone. This was followed by West Bengal, where names of 83.86 lakh voters were removed from the list.

Voter list decreased by 10.2%

According to Election Commission data, before the second phase, a total of 50.99 crore voters were registered in these states and union territories. After revision this number came down to 45.81 crore. That means 5.18 crore names were reduced in the voter list, which is about 10.2 percent of the total voters. The deleted names included 66.88 lakh dead voters. Of these, maximum 25.47 lakh were from Uttar Pradesh and 24.16 lakh from West Bengal. Apart from this, after objections and investigation, 63.16 lakh other names were also removed from the list.

Now the turn of the third phase

The Election Commission has started the third phase of SIR from May 14. It covers 16 states including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Haryana, Jharkhand, Punjab, Odisha, Uttarakhand and three union territories including Delhi, Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli-Daman and Diu. The list of about 36.73 crore voters is being revised in these states.
