Copper and brass utensils are commonly found in Indian homes. These utensils are not only considered pure, but are also beneficial for health. However, one of their problems is that they turn black quickly. This black color is formed due to exposure to air, moisture and dust. But no need to worry, because there are some old home remedies to clean these utensils, using which you do not need to spend money.
Ways to maintain the shine of utensils
Copper and brass utensils are used from puja thali to eating utensils. With time, their luster diminishes. No need to buy expensive cleaners. There are some easy home remedies passed down from the time of grandmothers, which will make your utensils shine again. From lemon to vinegar, here are some effective methods.
1. Use of lemon and salt
An old way to clean brass and copper utensils is lemon and salt. Cut a lemon in half, apply salt on it and rub it well on the vessel. After 5-10 minutes, wash with lukewarm water and wipe with a dry cloth. This removes accumulated dirt and blackness easily.
2. Tamarind pulp
Tamarind pulp is naturally acidic, which helps remove grime from copper and brass. Soak tamarind in water and extract its pulp, apply it on a utensil and rub it for a few minutes, then wash it with clean water.
3. Mixture of vinegar and salt
Make a paste by mixing some vinegar and one spoon salt in a bowl. Apply it on the vessel and leave it for 10 minutes. After this clean with a soft scrubber and wash with water. This brings back the shine of the utensils.
4. Baking Soda and Lemon
If there are stubborn stains on utensils, make a paste by mixing baking soda with a little lemon juice. Rub it lightly on the vessel and wash it after a few minutes. This method is very effective in removing stains.
5. Paste of flour, salt and vinegar
Make a thick paste by mixing one spoon flour, one spoon salt and a little vinegar. Apply it on the vessel and leave it for 15 minutes. Then rub with a soft cloth and wash with clean water. This traditional recipe is useful for both brass and copper.
6. Tomato or Tomato Chutney
The natural acid present in tomatoes helps in restoring the shine of the utensils. Apply tomato juice or a little tomato chutney on the utensil, rub it and wash it after 10 minutes.
7. Wood Ash
Earlier people used to clean brass and copper utensils with stove ash. By rubbing slightly wet ash on the utensils, the dirt gets removed and the utensils start shining. Even today, in some houses, utensils are washed with ashes.
8. Gram flour and lemon
Make a paste by mixing a little lemon juice in one spoon gram flour. Apply it on the utensil and rub it for a few minutes and then wash it with water. This not only cleans the utensils but also maintains their natural shine.

- After washing utensils, always wipe them with a dry and soft cloth.
- Avoid leaving wet for long periods.
- Do not use strong chemicals or rough scrubbers.
