Reliance Foundation Hospital today achieved a significant milestone in its organ transplant program. Six life-saving organ transplant surgeries were successfully performed at the hospital, with two post-mortem organ donations being successfully carried out in one day. Along with this, organ and tissue (tissue) exchange was also done with leading organ transplant centers in India.

The first organ donor, a 39-year-old woman, was declared brain dead after suffering a severe brain injury in a road accident. His family decided to donate organs and took a precious decision to give new life to many needy patients.

Organ transplants done at Reliance Foundation Hospital –

• A 59-year-old male patient on VV-ECMO support in Supra-Urgent category was successfully transplanted with both lungs (bilateral lungs).
• A 46-year-old female patient underwent a liver transplant.
• A 56-year-old female patient underwent a kidney transplant.
Organs donated to other centers
• U of Hriday Ahmedabad. N. Referred to Mehta Institute of Cardiology.
• One kidney was donated to Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai.
Tissue donation
• Both corneas have been donated, helping two people regain their sight.
The second organ donor, a 59-year-old woman, was declared brain dead after a Left Intraparenchymal Haemorrhage. His family also decided to donate organs and gave new life to many.
Organ transplants done at Reliance Foundation Hospital
• A 44-year-old female patient underwent a liver transplant.
• A 60-year-old male patient underwent a kidney transplant.
Organs donated to other centers
• One kidney was donated to Apollo Hospital, Navi Mumbai.
Tissue donation
• Both corneas were donated through EBCRC Eye Bank, Mumbai. It helped two more people to get their sight.

A total of five patients were successfully transplanted six organs at Reliance Foundation Hospital. These included both lungs, two livers and two kidneys. Also, other organs and tissues were made available to patients in various hospitals of the country. This coordination underscored the strengthening of the spirit of cooperation in the organ donation and organ transplantation system in India.

30 hours of tireless work

Dr. Tarang Gianchandani said, “Our multidisciplinary transplant team worked tirelessly for nearly 30 hours to successfully extract, transport and transplant each organ. Liver Transplant Team led by Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Lung Transplant Team, Intensivist Team led by Dr. Rahul Pandit, Liver Transplant ICU Team led by Dr. AN Singh, Transplant Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Nursing Staff, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the staff of the Transplant Coordinator, the Operation Theater, the Blood Bank, and the Superintendent of J. J. Hospital for providing the organs on time and also to the Mumbai Police.
