Manchester United seem to have finally ended their long-standing pursuit of Victor Osimhen, despite the Nigerian forward’s outstanding form in Turkey. Reports suggest that while Osimhen remains one of Europe’s most lethal strikers, financial constraints at Old Trafford have forced the Red Devils to take a different direction in their transfer plans.
Why the Osimhen pursuit is over
For years, Manchester United fans have dreamed of seeing Osimhen lead the attack at Old Trafford. However, that dream now appears to have reached its end. The 27-year-old has continued his dominance in the Turkish Super Lig, but the total cost of his transfer fee and his substantial wages—further enhanced by Turkey’s favourable tax regime—has made him unaffordable for the Premier League side.
Despite Osimhen’s consistent scoring record for Galatasaray, Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall has stated that the “ship has sailed” on any possible move to United. The combination of a hefty transfer fee and the high salary he commands under Turkey’s tax system makes such a deal unrealistic. Even though United are in the market for attacking reinforcements, they are unwilling to meet the high valuation of the former Napoli talisman.
Barcelona eyeing Benjamin Sesko
As Manchester United step away from Osimhen, attention in Europe shifts towards Barcelona, who are reportedly considering Benjamin Sesko as a potential successor to Robert Lewandowski. While Julian Alvarez remains the top target for Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, the difficulty in negotiating with Atletico Madrid has prompted the Catalan club to explore alternative options, including the Slovenian striker.
Manchester United, however, are paying little attention to the speculation from Spain. The club sees Sesko as their long-term centre-forward and have yet to receive any approach from Barcelona. Marshall commented: “United haven’t had any offer or expression of interest from Barcelona for Sesko and aren’t treating those links with much seriousness at the moment. There was quite a bit of frustration about how Barca handled the Marcus Rashford deal, and United are wary of doing business with them again soon.”
The Rashford question and Tottenham’s interest
Marcus Rashford’s future continues to be a key talking point after his loan spell at Camp Nou. Although Barcelona decided against making his move permanent, Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as strong contenders for his signature. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly a big admirer of the England international, and Spurs are believed to be preparing a formal offer below United’s £40 million release clause.
Rashford is said to prefer either a return to the United first team or a move abroad. However, United’s need to reduce their wage bill could push them to reconsider. The forward is reportedly open to taking a pay cut to secure a transfer at this stage of his career, but he remains reluctant to join another Premier League rival. United are also firm that they will not agree to another loan move to Barcelona after the Spanish club chose not to exercise their permanent option earlier.
Manchester United’s summer recruitment plan
With the Osimhen deal off the table, Manchester United are focusing on creating a more balanced attacking setup. The club continues to believe in Sesko’s potential but recognises the need for further support. A shortlist of five forwards has been drawn up, including Premier League-proven players such as Jean-Philippe Mateta, who could also offer mentorship to younger talents. The priority is to avoid hasty signings and ensure squad depth adequate for Champions League competition.
In midfield, recruitment efforts are already underway. A deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is reportedly close to completion, while negotiations continue for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. Depending on Rashford’s future, any funds from his transfer could be redirected towards these priority targets. For now, United’s attention turns to the training ground as they gear up for their pre-season opener against Wrexham.
