The Central Government’s S agency has warned that WhatsApp web and desktop users are being targeted on a large scale through malware viruses, due to which attempts are being made to gain illegal access to people’s devices and steal sensitive information.

National cyber security agency Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) gave this information. CERT-IN has warned WhatsApp web and desktop users to be cautious about any files, even if they are received from a friend, colleague or family member.

WhatsApp web users are being targeted

“It has been observed that WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web users are being targeted by a campaign to spread malware on a large scale,” the agency said in an advisory issued on June 25.

Kaspersky and SecureList report that threat actors use hacked WhatsApp accounts to send dangerous files directly to victims. This makes the messages appear genuine and significantly increases the chances of a successful attack.

Hackers send files to known people

CERT-IN said, ‘The attackers use the already hacked WhatsApp account to send dangerous files to people known to the user. Due to messages coming from the number of a known person, the person receiving them may be ready to open the file quickly.

Once a malware attack is successful, cyber criminals can gain remote access (control over the device), stealing personal information for fraudulent activities. People may have to face financial loss due to all this.
