Jurgen Klopp has spoken candidly about his bond with Mohamed Salah, dismissing any lingering tension from their final period together at Liverpool. The German coach, who guided the Egyptian star to global fame, affirmed that the two are now ‘friends’ despite several heated moments during their time together at Anfield.

Klopp clarifies his relationship with Salah

Putting an end to speculation about a continued rift with Salah, Klopp confirmed that their relationship has evolved positively. He explained that their dynamic has shifted from a demanding manager-player connection to a genuine friendship.

The former Liverpool manager, who now serves as Red Bull’s head of global football operations, reflected on how their professional bond transformed once the pressures of competition subsided.

“We are friends now,” Klopp told ESPN. “As I’ve always said, I want to be friends with my players, but not necessarily their best friend. When you work together, there are times when players don’t feel that way because I must make decisions they might not like. But that’s all behind us now. The most powerful thing in life is good memories — they outweigh everything else. And right now, we share those, so yes, we are friends. And now he’s playing at the World Cup.”

Reflecting on the London Stadium incident

The relationship between Klopp and Salah wasn’t always smooth sailing, with one of their most talked-about disagreements occurring during a touchline altercation at the London Stadium in 2024. However, Klopp chose to focus on the greatness of their shared journey over seven years rather than the occasional argument. He lauded Salah’s professionalism and his contribution to Liverpool’s rise to the top of world football.

He explained, “It’s easy to point fingers at individual moments and say, ‘He should have done this better or that better.’ But when you work with him daily, you understand his commitment. I want him to try, to take risks, even to fail — because without failure, there’s no growth. If you don’t take risks, where’s the excitement, where’s the progress? Did he perform every single day? Probably not, but I can’t recall any player who did. As a coach, you always think of ways a player could improve, but when I look back, what we witnessed was greatness.”

An ‘imperfect’ modern legend

Klopp also commented on Salah’s stature in Egypt and beyond. “He’s such an extraordinary player, an inspiration for so many people — not only in the Arab world but across the globe. I think Egypt might not be a great place for me to take a holiday because he made me very famous there! There’s no chance of a quiet holiday. We were fortunate to work with many great players, but Mo’s numbers over the years have been unmatched.”

Drawing comparisons with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Klopp praised Salah’s professionalism and consistency throughout his Liverpool career. “Did he perform every day? Probably not. But I can’t remember one player, honestly, who did that. Of course, as a coach, you always think he could do this or that better, but the truth is we witnessed greatness. That’s the reality. Most of the time, he delivered brilliantly — scoring crucial goals, deciding matches, and pushing us to new levels. He remains an incredible professional. None of us are perfect — not Messi, not Ronaldo, not Mo Salah. But they’re closer to perfection than the rest of us.”

Concerns over Salah’s injury

Although Klopp still keeps in touch with his former star, there are current concerns about Salah’s physical condition on the international stage. The forward is battling to recover in time for the knockout rounds of the 2026 World Cup after sustaining a muscle injury during the group phase.

The 32-year-old remains a major doubt for Egypt’s round of 32 clash with Australia due to a hamstring problem. Klopp is expected to be following closely, as Egypt hope their captain can regain fitness in time to lead them deeper into the tournament.
