George Russell Dominates Austrian Grand Prix, Triumphs Over Verstappen and Antonelli

George Russell secured his first victory since the opening round of the 2026 Formula 1 season, clinching a commanding win at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday morning ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.

This triumph propels Russell back into second place in the championship standings, moving ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Russell began the race from pole position, capitalising on his sharp grasp of the regulations to outmanoeuvre his teenage Mercedes teammate Antonelli during qualifying. Russell managed to complete his final flying lap despite a single yellow flag being waved for Verstappen’s high-speed crash in the penultimate corner, giving him the crucial edge.

Reflecting on his performance, Russell said, "I had to push on every single lap. When you’re driving at that limit, small mistakes are inevitable, and I was fully aware of how fast the others were behind me. Kimi has been incredibly quick all season, every lap. I kept an eye on the timing screens; we pitted a bit early, and though it was a long stint, the team executed the strategy perfectly."

The race opened with an intense fight for second place between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, which led Verstappen to demand a penalty against Hamilton. However, the stewards decided against any sanction. Running a longer first stint on hard tyres, Verstappen found himself well-positioned behind Russell as Hamilton’s pace dropped, slipping from third to fifth.

Despite his crash at turn nine during his final qualifying lap, Verstappen recovered strongly to claim second place in the race.

In the closing laps, Verstappen reduced the gap to Russell from a peak of 10 seconds to under three, as the Mercedes driver was briefly held up by Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. Verstappen held onto second place — his best finish of the season and only his second podium — while championship leader Kimi Antonelli crossed the line just a second behind.

Outside the podium, Oscar Piastri finished 21.809 seconds adrift in fourth, followed by Hamilton in fifth and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar in sixth. Lando Norris came home seventh.

After almost taking pole position on Saturday, Charles Leclerc finished eighth, the final driver on the lead lap.

The Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten, scoring the remaining points in ninth and tenth positions respectively.
