For those planning a road trip to the Himalayas or a weekend getaway in Uttar Pradesh, or a wildlife safari in Madhya Pradesh, it may be time to check the weather update before packing your bags. In a recent update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts across many northern and central Indian states. In Delhi-NCR, thunderstorms and gusty winds are predicted.
What travellers need to know
Travellers must gear themselves for possible road closures, slower traffic and train services, flight delays and waterlogging. The weather might disrupt outdoor activities over the next few days.
Uttarakhand
Given the current situation, travelling in the hills could get difficult. Among the states on alert, Uttarakhand remains one of the biggest concerns for tourists as heavy rainfall is expected in several districts. This increases the risk of landslides, falling rocks and flash floods along mountain highways.
Stay updated with official advisories.
Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh too, there is a forecast for heavy rain. Pilgrims visiting Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj may experience waterlogging and slower road traffic. The state might experience thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Madhya Pradesh
The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, with heavy to very heavy showers expected in isolated areas. Safari plans may need flexibility. This is particularly important for travellers visiting famous wildlife parks such as Kanha National Park and Bandhavgarh National Park in the region.
Delhi-NCR
Though the weather may bring some relief from the scorching heat, it can create transportation challenges. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds, cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall in parts of the national capital region. Wind speeds may reach 40-60 kmph in case of thunderstorms.
Thunderstorm and gusty wind alert: Which states are affected?
The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds over East Rajasthan, West Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts touching 60 kmph. In southern India, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rain in four districts of Tamil Nadu.
Tips for monsoon travellers
If you're travelling over the next few days, a little preparation is suggested:
Check the latest weather update before planning a trip
Check for local advisories before leaving
Keep buffer time for flights, trains
Carry waterproof luggage covers and rainwear
Avoid driving through flooded roads
Despite several travel challenges, the monsoon season remains one of the most beautiful times to explore the beauty of the country.
