This summer, residents of Delhi have found no respite from the heat, even after sunset. The national capital has recorded its hottest nights in the past four years. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the average minimum temperature during the pre-monsoon period from March to June reached 22.9 degrees Celsius, marking the highest since 2022.
As of June 29, the average minimum temperature for this March-June period stood at 22.9 degrees Celsius.
Temperature Trends Over the Years
Previously, the average minimum temperatures were recorded at 21.2 degrees Celsius in 2021, 23.3 in 2022, 20.9 in 2023, 22.8 in 2024, and 22.5 in 2025. This year's figure is the highest seasonal average since 2022. Meanwhile, the average maximum temperature for the same period until June 28 was noted at 37 degrees Celsius, compared to 36.5 in 2021, 38.4 in 2022, 35 in 2023, 37.6 in 2024, and 36.6 in 2025. This marks the second highest average temperature in the last six years, following 2024.
Why Are Nights So Unbearably Hot?
Meteorologists attribute the lack of relief during the nights to several factors, including the increasing impact of urbanization, the 'urban heat island effect' caused by concrete structures, and elevated humidity levels in the atmosphere. These conditions prevent the heat accumulated during the day from dissipating at night, resulting in minimum temperatures remaining several degrees above normal, a phenomenon clearly observed in Delhi this year.
For residents to escape this sweltering heat and warm nights, they are now relying solely on the anticipated monsoon rains.
