Maharashtra Govt: Maharashtra's Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced on Monday that the Marathi language will be mandatory for classes 1 to 10 in all schools across the state. He warned of strict action against institutions violating this directive and stated that the government is committed to promoting the Marathi language and the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
**Strict action against schools for negligence in teaching Marathi**
During the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced that teaching the Marathi language would be mandatory in all state schools. He stated that the government has issued directives to all schools in this regard and that strict action will be taken against those failing to comply with the rule.
This issue arose during a question raised by BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar, who expressed concern that many schools were still not teaching Marathi as a mandatory subject. During the discussion, several MLAs remarked that the fines imposed on schools violating the rule were too low and that existing regulations were not being properly implemented.
**Government places special emphasis on preserving the Marathi language and the history of Shivaji Maharaj**
Responding to these concerns, Bhuse said, "The Maharashtra government is fully committed to the preservation, promotion, and propagation of the Marathi language." He added that a special inspection drive would be launched across the state to review the implementation of mandatory Marathi education in all schools.
The minister stated, "If any violation is found during the inspection, strict action will be taken against the concerned schools and officials."
Bhuse also spoke about the inclusion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's history in school textbooks, noting that the content has been significantly expanded. He mentioned that while textbooks from other education boards previously devoted only about one-and-a-half columns to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the material has now been expanded to 22 pages with the Central Government's approval, enabling students to better understand the Maratha ruler's life and contributions.
The minister reiterated the state government's commitment to strengthening the Marathi language and ensuring that students learn about the glorious legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Amidst CBSE's new language policy, Maharashtra tightens enforcement of Marathi education
Bhuse stated that all schools must strictly adhere to the new regulations. Action will be taken against any school that fails to teach Marathi as a mandatory subject or disregards the rules.
This decision by the Maharashtra government comes at a time when the CBSE has announced plans to implement the three-language formula in schools across the country in a phased manner. However, the CBSE has clarified that the new language policy will not apply to current Class 10 students. Furthermore, students currently in Classes 7, 8, and 9 will not be required to take a third-language paper in the Class 10 board examinations.
According to the CBSE, students who have already opted for two foreign languages will now be required to study an additional Indian language alongside them. The board has also assured that the necessary study material for the new system will be made available on time.
