Mythological story of Lord Jagannath idol: The world famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath starts every year on Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya. According to Padmapuran, the second day of Shuklapaksha of Ashadh month is considered suitable for doing all the works.
Lord Vishnu resides in the form of Jagannath in Shri Jagannath Dham, one of the four holy Dhams. It is believed that one should go here last after visiting the other three Dhams. Jagannath Puri has been called Vaikuntha of the earth, this place is also called Shakkshetra, Neelanchal and Nilgiri. According to the Puranas, Shri Krishna incarnated in the form of Neelamadhav in Jagannath Puri.
What is the secret of the incomplete statue of Lord Jagannath?
According to the scriptures, when the world’s greatest architectural architect Lord Vishwakarma was building the idol, he placed a condition in front of the king Indradayumna that he would make the idol by closing the door and no one would enter inside until the idol was made.
If the door opens for any reason before the idol is made then they will stop making the idol. To know whether the work of making the idol was going on inside the closed door or not, the king used to stand outside the door every day and listen to the sound of making the idol. One day the king did not hear any sound from inside, he thought that Vishwakarma had left his work and then the king opened the door and as per the condition, Vishwakarma disappeared from there.
After this the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra remained incomplete. From that day till today the idols are present here in the same form and even today the Lord is worshiped in the same form.
After all, why doesn’t God have hands and feet?
The incomplete form of Lord Jagannath gives deep spiritual knowledge. This teaches us that God cannot be completely reduced to a human form. God is beyond all physical limitations. The absence of hands and legs means that God moves through the devotion and faith of His devotees.
Lord Jagannath’s large, round eyes are not just an artistic choice. They symbolize God’s constant vigilance and protection. He keeps an eye on all His devotees day and night and takes care of their well-being. Many devotees feel a deep connection with the Lord just by looking at those eyes during darshan.
