The upcoming Germany vs Paraguay Round of 32 match will be officiated by Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed.
The knockout stages kicked off with co-hosts Canada securing a dramatic injury-time victory over South Africa on Sunday night. Monday’s early fixture will see Brazil and Japan face off in what promises to be another exciting encounter.
The focus will then shift to Boston, where Germany will be aiming to claim their first World Cup knockout win since lifting the trophy in Brazil back in 2014 — a surprising statistic for such a storied footballing nation.
Despite suffering a 2-1 loss to Ecuador in their final Group E outing, Germany still finished top of their group thanks to a dominant 7-1 win over Curaçao and a 2-1 triumph against Ivory Coast.
Paraguay, meanwhile, advanced to the knockout phase after a goalless draw with Australia, finishing third in Group D. Their campaign so far includes a 4-1 defeat to the United States and a narrow 1-0 win over Turkey.
Jalal Jayed will take charge of this crucial contest — his third assignment at the tournament. He previously officiated Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao and Portugal’s commanding 5-0 win against Uzbekistan.
Although both of Jayed’s matches have been high-scoring affairs, he has shown remarkable restraint with disciplinary actions. The 39-year-old has issued only two yellow cards across both games — one to Uzbekistan’s Odildzhon Khamrobekov and another to Portugal’s Renato Veiga.
Jayed will be assisted on the sidelines by fellow Moroccans Zakaria Brinsi and Mostafa Akarkad.
China’s Ming Na has been appointed as the fourth official, while Fei Zhou will serve as the reserve referee.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team will be headed by Tatiana Guzmán of Nicaragua, supported by Hamza El-Fariq of Morocco as the assistant VAR and Abdullah Alshehri of Saudi Arabia as the support VAR.
