New Delhi: WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a major privacy-focused update that will allow users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. The Meta-owned messaging platform has announced that users will soon be able to create unique usernames and use them to connect with others.
The feature is aimed at giving users more control over their privacy, especially when they are added to large groups or message a person or business for the first time. Once the feature is rolled out, a user’s phone number will not be automatically visible in such interactions if they have enabled a username.
WhatsApp said usernames will work as an additional way to connect on the platform. People will be able to choose and reserve a unique username, which can then be shared instead of a mobile number. However, the company has clarified that WhatsApp will not offer a public username directory or search suggestions. This means a person will need to know the exact username to start a conversation.
The company is also introducing an optional “username key” for added protection. This will help users decide who can contact them through their username, reducing the chances of unwanted messages.
The username reservation process will be rolled out gradually across the world over the coming months. Users will be notified when the option becomes available in their country. Creators, small businesses and organizations will also get an opportunity to claim WhatsApp usernames that match the handles they already use on Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
The update is expected to be especially useful for users who interact with unknown contacts, businesses, community groups or online customers, as it reduces the need to expose personal phone numbers.
WhatsApp, which has more than three billion users globally, said the move is part of its broader effort to make messaging more private and secure.
