‘I would make the same choices again!’ – Ronald Koeman defends five-man defence after Netherlands’ World Cup elimination by Morocco

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has strongly defended his tactical decisions after his team’s dramatic penalty shootout elimination to Morocco in the World Cup round of 32. Facing mounting criticism, the Dutch manager acknowledged he would take some immediate time to reflect on his future following the team’s painful exit in Monterrey.

Morocco’s late surge stuns the Dutch

The Oranje were sent crashing out of the tournament after conceding deep into stoppage time against a determined Morocco side. The Netherlands appeared to be heading for the next round when Cody Gakpo opened the scoring with 18 minutes left on the clock. But a last-gasp header from Issa Diop levelled the contest, forcing extra time and eventually a penalty shootout. In the shootout, the Dutch failed to convert three of their spot-kicks, falling to a 3-2 defeat.

Koeman defends his tactical setup

Koeman faced heavy criticism for moving away from his familiar four-man defence and opting for a five-man backline. It was the first time the Netherlands had started a game with that system since a 2-1 loss to Germany in March 2024, ending a 31-match stretch playing with a conventional defensive four.

When asked whether he had resigned, Koeman replied, “No, I haven’t. I’m going to reflect on my future. It’s right after the match and the disappointment is still raw. I’ll think it over and maybe I’ll reach a decision by tomorrow morning.”

Explaining his defensive approach, the coach said, “You can believe what you like, but we conceded far fewer chances against a team stronger than Sweden and Tunisia. If I had to do it all again, I would make the same choices. As the Dutch coach, when we concede an equaliser, I’ll always be criticised for picking five defenders.”

He continued, “It’s your right to criticise. You observe from the outside; I experience it with the players. And once again, I’d do it the same way.”

Morocco thrive as underdogs

Morocco’s coach Mohamed Ouahbi admitted that his staff had to quickly adjust after being surprised by the Netherlands’ unusually defensive setup. Drawing confidence from their fourth-place finish at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, the Atlas Lions believe they now possess the mindset and quality to challenge any elite football nation.

Ouahbi said, “We were surprised by their formation. When we saw it, we realised they intended to sit deep and defend. That’s not their usual style, so we had to adapt quickly. I took it as a form of respect.”

He continued, “Words don’t matter; performance on the pitch does. The World Cup in Qatar changed the mentality of Moroccan football. We’re unstoppable when we play our game, but if we lose focus, we’ll be the ones packing our bags.”

Morocco eye the next challenge

Morocco now travel to Houston for their round-of-16 match against Canada, with a potential semi-final clash against France — a rematch of their Qatar 2022 encounter — possible further down the line. The North African side head into the next round in top form, combining defensive resilience with a dangerous counter-attacking game. Meanwhile, the Netherlands face a period of introspection, with questions surrounding Koeman’s future and the team’s inability to close out key moments looming large.
