Wayne Rooney has openly appealed to Bayern Munich’s star striker Harry Kane to turn down a potential transfer to Barcelona and instead make a dramatic return to the Premier League with Manchester United. The former England captain believes his ex-international teammate should aim to dominate English football once again rather than chase another European league title.
Manchester United’s legendary forward steps in
Rumours about England skipper Kane’s next move have intensified following reports that Spanish giants Barcelona are preparing an ambitious approach. Since moving to Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, the 32-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable spell, netting an incredible 61 goals in the 2025-26 season. Though the Bundesliga champions are keen to keep hold of their prolific frontman, Rooney has urged United to make a bold effort to secure his signature this summer.
Rooney’s message to Kane
Speaking on his BBC podcast, Manchester United’s all-time leading goal scorer expressed confidence that Kane still has unfinished business in English football. The England captain scored 213 Premier League goals during his time at Tottenham, leaving him just 47 short of Alan Shearer’s all-time record.
Rooney emphasised that a move to Old Trafford would give Kane the ideal opportunity to cement his legacy while chasing that historic goal-scoring landmark. When asked about Barcelona’s interest, he said: “I think everyone would be interested. Listen, if Harry Kane’s not going to stay at Bayern Munich then I’d love him at Manchester United. If he’s listening: ‘Harry, you’ve got Alan Shearer’s record there… help bring Manchester United back!’.”
Premier League dream outweighs foreign glory
Although a lucrative transfer to Spain is a realistic option, Rooney believes that spearheading Manchester United’s revival would mean more than collecting trophies elsewhere.
He added: “You think for Harry Kane, he’s won the Bundesliga and let’s say he goes to Barcelona, he wins La Liga… deep down he wants to win the Premier League. Imagine he comes to Manchester United and he’s the one who drives that, to bring Manchester United back to winning the league.”
European powerhouses prepare for battle
Kane faces a decisive summer as top European clubs circle with interest. The 32-year-old remains under contract with Bayern Munich until June 2027, giving the German side a strong hand in negotiations. However, with Barcelona positioning themselves for a move and Rooney publicly fronting Manchester United’s charm offensive, a high-profile transfer battle could be on the horizon.
