Defensive absences have left Thomas Tuchel short of options at right-back ahead of England’s upcoming fixture.
Thomas Tuchel has offered fresh updates on the recovery progress of Reece James and Jarell Quansah as both defenders continue their rehabilitation from injury.
James and Quansah, who serve as the two right-backs in the England squad, have both sustained injuries that rule them out of the game in Atlanta.
The situation follows Tino Livramento’s withdrawal from the tournament a day prior to England’s opening match against Croatia, after he suffered an injury of his own.
With multiple setbacks at right-back, Tuchel has been forced to look for alternative solutions. Centre-back Ezri Konsa and left-back Djed Spence are currently seen as the leading options to fill the right full-back role when England face DR Congo.
During his pre-match press conference, Tuchel was asked for the latest on the pair’s fitness, as England remain hopeful both players could return later in the World Cup should the team advance further.
“They are getting closer and closer,” Tuchel said. “I saw both of them on the pitch. Jarell is slightly ahead of Reece in terms of the injury recovery.
“But it was a tight race even to make it into the squad this time. We need to ensure we play more matches in the tournament so that they can be available soon.”
Tuchel continued: “You find solutions. This is a team sport. We would love to have Reece and Jarell with us, but they are injured right now.
“Other players will step up, and we will push through together.”
