The upcoming Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination for 2026 is anticipated to be highly competitive. A staggering 30.66 lakh candidates have submitted applications for 12,256 available positions across various central government ministries and departments. Notably, over seven lakh applicants hail from Bihar, indicating a fierce competition of around 250 candidates vying for each position. This recruitment cycle introduces sectional timing, modifying the traditional exam format. Furthermore, candidates who have made mistakes in their applications will have a chance to rectify them through a correction window available from July 1 to July 7.

Application Corrections Window

The online application period was open from May 21 to June 22, 2026. Candidates with errors in their application forms can utilize the correction window from July 1 to July 7. The Commission has urged applicants to meticulously check all details before making any amendments.

Changes in Exam Pattern

For the first time, the SSC has implemented sectional timing for the preliminary exam. The Tier-1 exam will feature 100 questions divided into four sections, each containing 25 questions, with a strict 15-minute limit for each section. After 15 minutes, the exam will automatically transition to the next section. Correct answers will earn candidates two marks, while incorrect responses will incur a penalty of 0.50 marks.

Tier-2 Exam Subject Time Limits

The Tier-2 exam will also have designated time limits for various subjects. Candidates will receive 30 minutes for 30 Mathematics and Reasoning questions, 40 minutes for 45 English questions, and 20 minutes for 25 General Awareness questions. The Computer Knowledge section will consist of 20 questions to be completed within 15 minutes.

Selection Process and Exam Schedule

The Tier-1 computer-based examination for SSC CGL 2026 is expected to occur in August-September 2026, with the Tier-2 exam likely scheduled for December 2026. Candidates will be shortlisted for Tier-2 based on their Tier-1 scores. The final merit list will be determined solely by performance in Tier-2 and the preferences indicated by candidates. Document verification will follow the final selection by the respective department.
