England manager Thomas Tuchel has made a significant selection decision regarding Manchester United star Marcus Rashford ahead of their crucial clash against DR Congo later today.
Rashford booked his spot in Tuchel’s 2026 England World Cup squad after an outstanding season with Barcelona, where he scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions, playing a vital role in helping the Catalan giants retain their La Liga title.
Despite his strong form, Tuchel initially preferred Anthony Gordon in England’s opening fixture against Croatia. Rashford came off the bench in that match and found the back of the net, sealing a 4-2 victory for the Three Lions.
Tuchel again showed faith in Gordon for the next match against Ghana, but the ex-Newcastle winger struggled to make an impact. Rashford’s late substitution injected some energy into the side, although England were unable to break the deadlock, ending the game in a 0-0 draw.
Recognising the need for change, Tuchel finally gave Rashford a starting role in the match against Panama, where England secured a comfortable 2-0 win to confirm their progression to the Round of 32.
According to journalist David Ornstein, Rashford will once again start when England face DR Congo in Atlanta. Ornstein, writing for The Athletic, reported, “Marcus Rashford will keep his place when England take on DR Congo in the World Cup round of 32 later today.”
He added, “The Manchester United forward started and impressed in the final group-stage game against Panama and remains in the starting XI selected by Thomas Tuchel, preferred over Anthony Gordon.”
“Noni Madueke also starts, while Bukayo Saka continues to manage his fitness. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice returns to the lineup after missing the previous match.”
Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, who started against Panama, is expected to move back to the bench for this fixture against DR Congo.
Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence is also set to feature in the starting lineup, with Reece James and Jarell Quansah sidelined due to injuries.
If England overcome DR Congo, they will set up an enticing last-16 showdown with Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
