Erling Haaland has conceded that Norway face a towering challenge to keep their World Cup campaign alive as they prepare for a Round of 16 encounter against Brazil. Although Norway have claimed victory in three of their four matches so far, the Manchester City forward is keeping his feet firmly on the ground as his team gears up to meet one of the tournament favourites.
Norway booked their spot in the knockout stage with a tense 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the Round of 32. Haaland once again proved decisive, scoring the winning goal in the 86th minute after being set up by Patrick Berg. However, instead of celebrating excessively, the prolific striker quickly tempered expectations about their next challenge.
Speaking to broadcasters immediately after the final whistle, Haaland struck a cautious tone when discussing the upcoming clash. “We’re going to the Round of 16, and there will be excellent teams. It won’t be easy, we have to stay realistic. I don’t know if we’ll make it. We’ve trained hard and we’re still very prepared,” he remarked. When asked directly about Norway’s chances against Brazil, Haaland responded simply: “Uh... very slim.”
The Manchester City star has been in scintillating form throughout the tournament, showing that his club-level brilliance translates seamlessly to the international stage. His decisive goal against Ivory Coast was his fifth of the competition, placing him just one behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot standings. Remarkably, this is Haaland’s first World Cup appearance, yet his impact has been immediate.
Statistically, Haaland continues to post extraordinary numbers for his country. With 60 goals in only 53 international appearances, he has become the fastest active player to reach that tally. For comparison, Mbappe required 100 matches to reach 60 goals, while Messi needed 122 games to achieve the same feat.
In contrast to Haaland’s measured outlook, Norway captain Martin Odegaard struck a more confident tone after the victory. The Arsenal midfielder, who led the crowd in the traditional ‘Viking clap’ following the match, believes that the unpredictable nature of the World Cup could play in Norway’s favour. He encouraged his teammates to embrace their status as underdogs.
“It will be a tough game, but in football, anything can happen. We want to keep dreaming and enjoying ourselves, so let’s give it a try. We’ll see how long we can keep dreaming. Let’s prepare properly and enjoy the moment,” Odegaard told reporters.
Odegaard also recognised the immense talent in the Brazilian squad, mentioning his familiarity with Arsenal teammates Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes. “They have a fantastic team with several world-class players. I know some of them from Arsenal; they’re top-quality footballers,” he said.
Norway will take on Brazil at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday in what promises to be a captivating Round of 16 showdown.
