Late Wednesday, Russian forces executed a drone strike on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, igniting fires in the city center and triggering an emergency response. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the attack resulted in a fire on the roof of a hotel located in the central Shevchenko district. Online images depicted flames engulfing the top of the CityHotel Residence as firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene.
"In the Shevchenkivskyi district, there is also a fire on the roof of a hotel. Rescuers and firefighters are on site. The attack on the capital continues. Stay in shelters!" Klitschko urged residents.
Klitschko also noted that a three-story non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district caught fire due to the drone attack. Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's Military Administration, confirmed that the hotel fire was a direct result of the strike. Authorities reported that debris from intercepted drones fell in both the Shevchenkivskyi and Desnyanskyi districts. Residents in Kyiv's western neighborhoods reported hearing explosions, and images shared on unofficial Telegram channels showed people seeking refuge in underground metro stations.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned of a significant overnight attack based on intelligence reports and decided to cut short his visit to Dublin. Local officials indicated that Russian drones approached Kyiv from various directions, raising concerns about a multi-stage assault. Emergency services remained active at the impacted sites as the situation continued to be monitored.
