The United States has successfully advanced to the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026, achieving a hard-earned 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. The match took place at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, where the co-hosts triumphed despite being reduced to ten players for a significant portion of the second half.
Folarin Balogun opened the scoring, but his game took a turn when he received a red card later on. Malik Tillman then secured the win with a spectacular free-kick.
The excitement began late in the first half when Balogun capitalized on a fortunate bounce in the penalty area, skillfully placing the ball past the goalkeeper to give the USA an early lead. However, the dynamics shifted in the second half when Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute for a harsh tackle on Tarik Muharemovic. Initially shown a yellow card, the referee changed his decision after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), resulting in a direct red card.
Balogun's unique achievement now places him in an exclusive group, being only the second player ever to score a goal and receive a red card in a World Cup knockout match. The first was the iconic Zinedine Zidane, who was dismissed during the 2006 final against Italy for headbutting Marco Materazzi, a match that France ultimately lost. In contrast, Balogun's team emerged victorious.
Despite the disadvantage of playing with ten men for nearly 30 minutes, the USA maintained their composure, and Bosnia struggled to create significant scoring opportunities. The USA's defense held firm, and in the 82nd minute, Malik Tillman delivered a stunning free-kick from just outside the box to confirm the victory.
This win marks a significant milestone for the USA, as it is their first triumph in a World Cup knockout match since reaching the quarter-finals in 2002. Under the guidance of Coach Mauricio Pochettino, the team is set to face Belgium in the next round on July 7 at Seattle Stadium, although they will be without their key striker Balogun due to suspension.
