Tezzbuzz Desk- A big controversy has arisen regarding the new “Username” feature of WhatsApp. The company was preparing to introduce this feature as a way for users’ privacy and better identification system, but even before the launch, security concerns regarding it came to the fore. Due to this, the government has currently banned its rollout.
Question raised as soon as username reservation started
Under the feature, users were given the option to reserve a username for themselves. However, as soon as it started, the discussion intensified that this could increase the cases of online fraud and scams. It was feared that any person could easily create a fake identity by changing the name, which could increase incidents like phishing and digital fraud.
Government sent notice to Meta, sought reply in three days
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Government of India has issued a notice to WhatsApp (Meta). The government has asked the company for complete information about this feature within three days. Also, clear instructions have been given that this feature should not be rolled out until satisfactory negotiations are completed.
The government says that such a feature may increase cases of digital arrest scam, phishing and other online frauds.
Company statement: Feature not launched yet
Amidst the controversy, a statement has come out from WhatsApp. The company spokesperson has clarified that the username feature has not been launched yet and it will be released in a phased manner by the end of this year.
The company also said that arrangements will be made to protect the names of celebrities, government institutions, celebrities and verified meta accounts, so that misuse can be prevented.
What will happen next?
At present, this feature will go ahead only after talks between the government and the company. Meta will have to further clarify its plans regarding security concerns, only after which a final decision on its rollout will be taken.
