With potential transfers for Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes no longer viable, Manchester United are now assessing alternative options in the market.

After missing out on Fernandes, there is little doubt about the direction the Red Devils should now take in their pursuit of midfield reinforcements.

Aurelien Tchouameni has quickly become the top target for INEOS, with reports suggesting the club might even be willing to exceed its current wage structure to bring him to Old Trafford.

The French international is a classic defensive midfielder – strong in both aerial and ground duels, physically robust enough for the Premier League, and capable of advancing the ball with precision and intent.

While Tchouameni may not possess the same nimble footwork as Kobbie Mainoo, who thrives in tight spaces, his presence would allow Mainoo to concentrate on advancing the team’s attacking play. This balance makes Tchouameni an ideal partner for the young Englishman in midfield.

Following his commanding display in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the World Cup round of 32, French media reactions perfectly illustrated why he fits the mould of Manchester United’s next number six.

Foot Mercato commented: “Positioned deeper than Rabiot, he was less visible than his midfield partner.

“This positioning may have seemed odd in the first half considering France’s dominance. However, after the break, his forward run was instrumental in creating the second goal.”

Maxi Foot added: “A solid performance from the French midfielder. Stationed in the heart of the pitch, he excelled in regaining possession and winning numerous duels.

“As always, the Real Madrid player showcased impressive technical skill, opening up attacking avenues. We particularly appreciated his interception that led to Barcola’s goal.”

Despite being one of France’s most consistent performers, Tchouameni’s contributions have often gone under the radar while the attacking players receive most of the plaudits.

Nevertheless, these assessments highlight how effectively Tchouameni operated as the lone holding midfielder against Sweden, allowing Adrien Rabiot and the forwards to focus on creativity and finishing while he maintained defensive discipline.

Although missing out on Fernandes has disappointed some, his profile was not exactly what Manchester United required in their midfield setup.

While Fernandes offers ball progression and passing quality, he lacks the defensive solidity needed to complement Mainoo. His vulnerabilities during transitions might have exposed United once again in central areas, particularly when facing counter-attacks.

Therefore, investing heavily in Tchouameni appears far more logical for United than doing so for Anderson or Fernandes. Lining up alongside Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, the Frenchman could provide much-needed defensive balance and control in midfield.

With Tchouameni anchoring the midfield, United could then confidently turn their focus towards nurturing or recruiting emerging talents such as Johan Manzambi or Lamine Camara.
