More than ten years since he last exhibited at New York Fashion Week, Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) is making a much-anticipated comeback to the New York runway with his Spring/Summer 2027 collection, which marks a key moment for Indian high fashion. Sabyasachi, who is known for his lush textile heritage and modern charm, is expected to be the big star of this season with a maximally extravagant approach and 'focus to be on the clothes' only.
The designer will showcase his collection on September 15 as per the preliminary CFDA itinerary. Earlier, Sabyasachi admitted that he departed New York with the intention of returning at the right time after his initial experience there. Born and brought up in Kolkata, his last runway moment was headlined by Deepika Padukone, which also marked the 25th anniversary of his label in Mumbai.
Addressing the buzz surrounding his return, the designer shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram, writing, “There’s been a lot of conversation about my return to New York Fashion Week. The truth is, I never really left. I simply chose to build quietly. The older I get, the more I value substance over noise. Today, fashion seems increasingly driven by engagement and velocity. Somewhere along the way, the clothes can become secondary to the spectacle.”
He continued, “I believe the world often misunderstands India. Beneath what is sometimes seen as pomp and pageantry lies a modern country with a wise soul. So this New York show will be restrained. I want the focus to be on the clothes.”
He concluded by reaffirming the philosophy he believes in and stated, “At Sabyasachi, that’s what we’ve always tried to make. Things that last. Because memories do."
As international interest in Indian fashion scene continues to soar, Sabyasachi’s return isn’t just another runway style moment. But it is a statement of cultural confidence, with artisanal excellence and the growing influence of Indian luxury on the world’s most renowned fashion calendar.
