Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly on the brink of leaving his position as Germany’s head coach after crucial discussions with the German Football Association (DFB). Following the national team’s disappointing exit from the World Cup, senior officials have recommended that he resign voluntarily. Should he refuse, a formal termination is expected, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp emerging as the leading candidate to replace him.

According to reports from Sky Sport, Nagelsmann attended an extensive three-and-a-half-hour meeting at the DFB headquarters on Thursday. The meeting was attended by DFB president Bernd Neuendorf, managing director Andreas Rettig, sporting director Rudi Voller, and Bundesliga president Hans-Joachim Watzke. During the session, Nagelsmann was asked to provide a detailed explanation for Germany’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

Germany had topped their group after defeating Curacao 7-1 and the Ivory Coast 2-1, despite a 2-1 loss to Ecuador. However, their tournament came to an abrupt end in the round of 32, where they were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties following a 1-1 draw. After a frank post-mortem of the early exit, the DFB leadership made its position clear, leaving Nagelsmann with limited options regarding his future.

The DFB has strongly advised Nagelsmann to tender his resignation voluntarily. If he decides against doing so, plans for a formal dismissal are already in place. Nagelsmann assumed charge of the national team in September 2023 under a contract that runs until 2028.

Since taking over, Nagelsmann has managed 37 matches, recording 23 wins, six draws, and eight defeats. His potential departure bears striking similarities to his previous managerial spell at Bayern Munich, where he was dismissed in March 2023 after less than two years at the helm due to unsatisfactory results.

Attention has now turned towards finding a replacement, with Jurgen Klopp emerging as the clear frontrunner. Klopp has been out of management since leaving Liverpool in May 2024 following a remarkable nine-year tenure at Anfield, during which he guided the club to multiple major honours including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League titles.

Currently, Klopp works as a World Cup pundit for MagentaTV and serves as the head of global football for the Red Bull network. Appointing him as national coach would be a major coup for the DFB, potentially revitalising the team with his dynamic tactical style and restoring confidence among supporters after a period of disillusionment.

Nagelsmann must now decide whether to step down voluntarily or await an official dismissal from the DFB in the coming days. Meanwhile, the association may attempt to persuade Klopp to end his managerial break and take charge, as they look to bring stability and renewed purpose to the German national team.
