Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali appears close to finalising his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
Tonali credited Roberto De Zerbi for playing a crucial role in persuading him that joining Spurs was the right move for his career.
The Italian international has reportedly agreed to leave Newcastle United in a deal worth around £100 million.
Despite serious interest from Manchester City, Tonali explained that a mix of family reasons and his connection with De Zerbi ultimately guided his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur.
Both De Zerbi and Tonali hail from the Lombardy region and share links to Brescia. De Zerbi was born in the city, while Tonali developed through the Brescia Calcio youth system and made his senior debut there before moving to AC Milan.
Tonali emphasised that his personal relationship with the Spurs manager played a major role in convincing him to commit to the club’s project.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Tonali said: “Newcastle wanted the best for me, and we wanted the best deal for them, so I think when things go that way, it feels different.
“We’re all happy, and I’m ready for this new challenge.”
He continued: “Let’s say De Zerbi did a great job. He was a huge influence in all of this.
“It was a life decision for my family because we’ve been in Newcastle for the last three years, and last year our lives changed when our child was born.
“So we decided to change our lifestyle a bit, and De Zerbi made a big difference. He did an excellent job, not just as someone from Brescia and a friend, but by showing his dedication and the hard work behind what he does.”
Tonali further added: “We’re definitely taking things step-by-step. First, I need to arrive, complete the medical tests, sign the contract, and then gradually get into the training camp, which won’t be easy.
“The World Cup is ongoing right now, so the team will come together in about a month.
“The beginning will be challenging, especially since the club has endured two tough seasons. We’ll do our best to ensure everything feels fresh and positive moving forward.”
