Arsenal’s attempt to sign Leicester City’s young winger Jeremy Monga has hit a major snag, with Manchester City reportedly preparing a move to hijack the deal. New City manager Enzo Maresca is believed to be eager for a reunion with the 16-year-old prodigy he once coached at the King Power Stadium.

Manchester City have now entered the competition to secure the signature of Leicester’s rising star Monga, threatening to derail Arsenal’s long-standing efforts. Although the Gunners are currently understood to be leading the negotiations, City are making strong efforts to lure the teenager away from their Premier League rivals.

The sudden involvement of City is largely driven by the influence of Enzo Maresca. The Italian tactician is reportedly keen to work again with Monga, whom he mentored during his spell at Leicester City in the 2023-24 season. This connection has given City an opportunity to present themselves as a serious alternative for the highly rated winger, putting pressure on Arsenal’s pursuit.

Monga made headlines when he debuted in the Premier League at just 15 years and 271 days against Newcastle United in April 2025, becoming the third-youngest player ever to appear in the competition. Only Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri were younger at the time of their debuts. The young winger went on to make seven substitute appearances as Leicester were relegated from the Premier League at the close of that campaign.

Just a few months later, Monga carved out another record, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Championship history. He found the net in a 2-1 loss to Preston North End in August 2025, aged 16 years and 37 days. That goal broke the previous record held by Jude Bellingham, who had scored for Birmingham City in 2019 at 16 years and 63 days old.

Leicester City have traditionally been known for retaining their top academy graduates, but recent seasons have seen a change in trend. Talents such as Tyrese Noubissie and Trey Nyoni have already departed for Manchester City and Liverpool, respectively. Losing Monga – arguably their most gifted young player – would be another major setback for the Foxes. The outcome of the ongoing negotiations, including the transfer fee, will be vital for Leicester as they aim to rebuild following consecutive relegations.
