Cristiano Ronaldo has not dismissed the possibility of retiring from international football after this summer’s World Cup, following hints from his sister that this might be his final major tournament.
The Portuguese legend found the back of the net as Portugal defeated Croatia yesterday to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the World Cup. At 41 years of age, the Al Nassr forward continues to perform at the top level, influencing crucial matches for his national side.
However, even Ronaldo’s illustrious career cannot continue indefinitely. His sister, Katia Aveiro, suggested in a conversation with the Portuguese media that fans may soon witness the end of his international journey.
“We must cherish these moments. It’s the last dance for two players, both for Croatia and for Portugal. The most important thing is to appreciate these 20-odd years that we’ve lived, won, and achieved so much,” Aveiro shared, as quoted by the Metro.
When asked whether supporters might see Ronaldo competing at Euro 2028, she added: “From the information I have, they can start to say their farewells. Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s not today they are saying goodbye, but soon. I believe this is their farewell.
“I’m referring to the national team. Based on reliable information, I believe this is his last dance.”
Ronaldo, on the other hand, has made it clear that he will not make any decisions about his future while emotions run high.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star did not confirm retirement either, suggesting that any announcement will only come after the conclusion of the World Cup.
“I no longer make my decisions, or at least not many of them, under emotional influence. We will see after the World Cup,” Ronaldo said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
If this indeed turns out to be his final major international competition, fans around the world would be hoping to see Ronaldo finally lift the World Cup trophy — the one major honour missing from his glittering career.
Portugal may not be among the top favourites this year, but the team, which triumphed at Euro 2016, continues to boast a strong lineup of world-class talent.
Ronaldo remains their talisman and top performer, though at his age he cannot carry the burden alone. Fortunately, he is surrounded by a talented supporting cast that includes Bernardo Silva, Joao Neves, Vitinha, Rafael Leao, and Nuno Mendes.
