The 30-year-old fast bowler Aaron Summers is likely to get a jail term after being accused of child abuse. The incident took place in early January 2018, when the former fast bowler met a 15-year-old after talking to her on social media. The player then apparently went on to pick the complainant up near her house before abusing the victim near the school premises.
Caroline Graves, who is representing the player in Australia’s Supreme Court, said the events took place during the cricketer’s tough times. She also said that the player was feeling isolated socially and was heavily into social media. “This allegation will never go away from his mind, but Summer has to get on with his life,” the Daily Mail quoted the council as saying.
Fast-bowler lawyer also added, “At the time of this incident taking place, Aaron was one of the fastest bowlers in the world, and there were even talks of him being given a chance to play international cricket. He also knows that there is no chance of that happening anymore as there won’t be any progress on the cricketing front in Australia or overseas.”
The player was arrested in 2025 while he was in the Northern Territory before being transferred to Tasmania. When the incident took place, the 30-year-old was part of the Hobart Hurricanes team in the Big Bash League. The defence council asked for a suspended sentence, which the judge seemed to deny. It is expected that the former cricketer, who has been out on bail, will be taken into custody once again. Sentencing has been scheduled for August 2026.
