Amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia (Middle East), India has taken such a shocking step regarding the supply of LPG, which has surprised the whole world. India no longer wants to depend only on Gulf countries for its gas needs. This is the reason why India has completely changed its old strategy and has started buying record breaking gas from a new superpower country.

According to the latest data revealed recently, even in the month of June, India has purchased maximum LPG from America. Yes, America has now consistently emerged as India’s largest LPG supplier, while traditional friends like UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have been left far behind in this race. However, even from these Gulf countries, India’s gas supply has not been completely stopped, but now America has become the new king of this game.

Record breaking gas arrived from America in the month of June

If we talk about the figures, in June India has received supply of about 7.73 lakh metric tons of LPG from America. This figure is also surprising because it is about 19.4% more than the month of May. On the other hand, UAE, which was once India’s first choice, has now slipped to second place, from where about 1.57 lakh metric tonnes of gas came to India in June. Apart from this, two other big Gulf countries, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, supplied only 64 thousand metric tons of LPG each in June.

After all, why did India have to change its strategy overnight?

The situation of war and tension that has been prevailing in West Asia for some time has created panic in the whole world regarding the supply chain of crude oil and LPG. India had also sensed the danger that if the situation in the Gulf countries worsened, there could be a shortage of LPG cylinders for burning in crores of homes in the country. To avoid this future crisis and to make its energy security impenetrable, India took a big decision to increase energy purchases from different countries.

How much did the total LPG supply increase in June?

According to data from commodity analytics firm ‘Kepler’, India’s total LPG supply increased to 11.91 lakh metric tonnes in June, whereas in May this figure was 11.55 lakh metric tonnes. This means that within just one month an increase of about 3% has been recorded in the total supply. This closeness between India and America has not happened suddenly, rather India has made a very big and long term agreement to buy 22 lakh tonnes of LPG from America every year. Its direct objective is to strengthen the energy partnership between the two countries and eliminate dependence on any one sector.

What is the future mega plan of the Government of India?

The next step of the Indian Government is now very clear that it will not tolerate any kind of interruption in the availability of fuel. In the coming times also, instead of relying only on Gulf countries, India will increase the scope of purchase of LPG and crude oil from countries of different continents. Apart from America, supplies from other new countries will also be increased in the coming days. The biggest benefit of this new policy of the government will be to the common citizens of the country, because no matter how much turmoil there is at the international level, there will be no impact on the supply of LPG in India.
