Manchester United have officially announced that goalkeeper Andre Onana will rejoin Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan.

Onana previously spent the 2025/26 campaign at Trabzonspor after it became clear that his role at Old Trafford had diminished significantly.

During that season, then-manager Ruben Amorim began the campaign with Altay Bayindir as the first-choice goalkeeper, leaving Onana to feature only once – in a disappointing EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

Manchester United’s acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp further indicated that Onana’s future at the club was uncertain. The Cameroonian international subsequently made 40 appearances for the Turkish Super Lig side, helping them secure a third-place league finish and lift the Turkish Cup.

Throughout the summer, Trabzonspor’s president repeatedly voiced interest in retaining Onana’s services, even as reports suggested that the goalkeeper was eager to return to Manchester United and fight for his place under new boss Michael Carrick.

However, with Lammens now firmly established as the team’s number one, Onana faced limited prospects for game time. Combined with his substantial wages, United concluded that another loan spell was the most practical resolution for all parties involved.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that an agreement had been reached between United and Trabzonspor for Onana’s return to Papara Park, which the club has now officially confirmed.

A statement from Manchester United read: “Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2026/27 season, subject to international clearance and registration.”

“Onana signed for the Reds in the summer of 2023 and has made 102 appearances so far.”

“Everyone at Manchester United wishes Andre the best of luck for the upcoming season.”

According to Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun, “Onana’s salary will once again be covered in full by Trabzonspor, despite his pay rise following Manchester United’s return to the Champions League.”

Luckhurst also reported last week that “United will receive a €1.5 million loan fee as part of the agreement.”
