A quick look at Manchester United’s current squad highlights a worrying shortage of cover for Luke Shaw at left-back.
Tyrell Malacia has left following the expiry of his contract, while both Harry Amass and Diego Leon are expected to go out on loan after the pre-season campaign.
Although the England international featured in every Premier League match last season, his history of injuries makes it difficult to rely on him fully – especially with the Red Devils set to play well over 40 fixtures across all competitions this year.
Patrick Dorgu can fill in at left-back if required, though he has demonstrated his attacking prowess further forward. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are naturally more comfortable when operating from the right flank.
For this reason, the 20-time English league champions have been exploring Premier League options to provide immediate support for Shaw and eventually succeed him in that position.
Myles Lewis-Skelly was among the names considered, with the Arsenal academy product eager for more playing time. However, Mikel Arteta appears to have reconsidered and now plans to retain him.
Another potential candidate is Lewis Hall, who has grown dissatisfied under Eddie Howe at Newcastle United and is reportedly open to a move to a club competing in the Champions League.
The Magpies, already hit by the departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, are determined not to lose their young left-back and have placed a hefty valuation on him.
According to reports from Sky Sports, INEOS are taking a one-step-at-a-time approach, choosing to focus on securing a new midfielder before turning their attention to Hall.
As per the report: “The pursuit of a left-back – Newcastle’s Lewis Hall – is on hold until they have recruited more midfielders.”
This cautious strategy might not sit well with the fans, as INEOS have already missed out on several primary targets. Their rigid, sequential approach to the transfer market could lead to further setbacks in strengthening other key positions.
It is worth noting that in addition to their pursuit of three midfielders, Manchester United also need reinforcements at left-back, left wing, striker, and a backup goalkeeper. There is plenty of work ahead for INEOS, and time is quickly slipping away.
